Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
